HOW THERAPY WORKS

In my practice, The Art of Therapy, I draw on Gestalt and Cognitive Behavioral theories. I help support people gain flexibility to manage the unknown, to have more joy in life and to develop clearer relationships.

From a Gestalt perspective, our most valuable resource is our ability to develop, boundary, maintain and build healthy relationships. This extends from family and loved ones, to colleagues and strangers. We are relational. We are social beings who are interrelated. At the core, our ability to manage relationships is one of our primary tasks in the world. Using a basis in Gestalt Therapy, I work from this “relational” model, challenging and supporting how you and I work together. What happens in therapy happens out in the world. The sessions are a microcosm for changing the patterns that feed hardships including anxiety and depression, trauma and relationship difficulties.

I also draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on shifting our irrational thoughts toward more realistic ones. CBT has been remarkably clinically effective in providing immediate coping strategies, as well as short- and medium-term relief, for anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, depression, attention deficit disorder, bi-polar disorder, post traumatic stress and low-self-esteem. Gestalt Therapy and CBT augment one another well; the former supporting long-term, emotional well-being provided by healthy relationships, and the latter giving clinically effective coping strategies to improve daily living

In study after study, researchers note that the relationship between the therapist and the client is the most crucial element in the client’s healing. I work by reflecting back your experience, with openness, unconditional regard and respect. I also challenge you to consider how you may be stuck in patterns that, though were once useful and likely crucial, may be getting in the way of your goals and your contentment. We also explore irrational thinking as a barrier to a healthier life. As all people are unique, I emphasize the theories and techniques that relate best to your personality and I always work in consultation with you to provide a safe, effective and healing experience. “The Art of Therapy” is the whole experience together: listening, dialogue, theory and our work together.
